SDA: Architect In The House Case Study + Testimonial

Stephen Donald, director and founder of Stephen Donald Architects Ltd, has been contributing to Architect in the House for the last 10 years.
In 2008 the AITH initiative allowed him to meet a passionate client looking to renovate his home, in Hollybush Hill, East London.
The client’s brief was to reorganise the ground and first floor areas of the house, which was dark and disjointed. SDA proposed to spatially re-organize the internal spaces in order to make more efficient use the existing footprint of the building.

Our proposed solution was firstly to reorganise the position and layout of the main stair case and hallway, allowing the circulation space to flow more easily from the stairs to the rest of the house and creating a dramatic double height central hallway. Two new windows at first floor level allow both North and South light to filter down to the hallway at ground level below.

‘The reasons we support Architect in the house is not only because it raises the profile of RIBA chartered architects and allows people who would not ordinarily consider using an architect for their project, but it also contributes  large sums of money to Shelter. Last year we raised over £2500 and have been informed that this sum is the highest ever raised in the AITH initiative by a chartered architect’s practice.’
